Stellar Cataclysms: A Grand Tour of the "Novae"

Prof. F. Douglas Swesty

One often hears abouta bewildering collections of various types of "Novae" in the context of astronomy and astrophysics. These include novae, supernovae, hypernovae, and kilonovae. All of these events arise from various cataclysms that befall a star, or pairs of stars, during their lifetimes. In this talk I will give an overview of these violent events and how we came to know what the varied causes of these events are.

Prof. Swesty received his PhD in Physics from SUNY Stony Brook in 1993. He spent six years at the University of Illinois as a postdoctoral researcher and as a Visiting Assistant Professor. He returned to Stony Brook in 1999 where he is currently a Research Associate Professor. His work focuses on nuclear astrophysics and computational astrophysics.
