Attention Teachers
In-Service Credit Available
Astronomy Open Night along with Geology Open Night , Worlds of Physics and The Living World provide attendance certification for New York State teachers wishing to apply for in-service credit. Among these programs you can accumulate hours of lecture credit each year to apply toward your school district's program. (Additional hours may be accrued through the L.I. Geologists programs).
Eight Astronomy Open Night lectures are scheduled each academic year, meeting at 7:30pm the first Friday of each month in the Earth and Space Sciences Lecture Room (001) followed by an observing session on the roof of the ESS building using the University's telescopes, weather permitting. The Worlds of Physics (second Friday of each month), The Living World (third Friday of each month) and Geology Open Night (last Friday of each month) typically schedule 6-7 lectures each year and are also held at 7:30pm in ESS 001. Details of the lecture schedules are given on the respective web sites.
Policies on in-service credit are set by school boards and you should check with your administration concerning the details of the local program.
