---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Draft generic service observing program caveats: - no grating changes during the night - grating tilt changes will be discouraged, and should occur no more than once per night - observers will work dusk to dawn (if not, we just stop somewhere) - Start of night Sequence - 25 bias exposures (10 minimum) - 15 Quartz lamp flat fields, well exposed at peak (5 minimum) - HeNeAr wavelength calibration lamp at Zenith - one short exposure to map strong lines (for zero-point shifts) - one long exposure to bring up weaker lines (for wavelength solution) - 3-5 well-exposed dusk sky spectra. If sky not observed at Zenith, precede with short wavecal - short wavecal - spectophotometric standard at dusk (I propose we observe spectrophotometric standards at the beginning and end of each night. These will come from an appropriate list of IRAF spectrophotometric standards.) - Observing sequence - slew to target - short wavecal - target (unless specified otherwise by the observer, integrations longer than about 10 minutes should be split into thirds.) - short wavecal (by default, wavecals should precede and follow all targets, unless specifically stated otherwise by the observer. I have never used the R/C, so I have no feeling for its mechanical stability. Can we get away with single wavecals after each slew?) repeat while dark and clear... If the grating tilt is to be changed, then - slew to standard - short wavecal - spectrophotometric standard - short wavecal - slew to zenith - short wavecal - long wavecal - change grating tilt - Quartz lamp PFLAT (3 exposures minimum) - short wavecal - long wavecal - spectrophotometric standard - resume observing - end of night sequence - slew to standard - short wavecal - spectrophotometric standard (at dawn) - short wavecal - if the grating tilt has been changed, obtain quartz lamp PFLATS to make 15 total at this tilt. - slew to zenith - short wavecal - long wavecal - 3-5 well exposed dawn sky spectra tasks: - define appropriate exposure times for Quartz lamp - define appropriate exposure times for long and short wavecals. - define list of spectrophotometric standards appropriate to grating and dispersion User must explicitly include any other standards or calibrations needed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
