Make sure they are well exposed but not saturated at any location. Here is the target list. The NGC targets are all globular clusters. Get well-exposed TWILIGHT SPECTRA at zenith at beginning of night. Aim for 3 spectra, each with between 5,000 and 30,000 counts per pixel. Times mentioned assume the observing night to be September 23rd, 2004. Start observing targets after taking twilight spectra, say 19:10. DO NOT FOCUS TELESCOPE YET! THE TELESCOPE SHOULD BE OUT OF FOCUS FOR THE FIRST FOUR STARS! HD165195: Target is bright star. - After pointing, center star on slit. NO GUIDING! - Take 30 s HeAr lamp comparison exposure - Set "guide" mode motion at 1 arcsec/sec - After starting a 180 sec exposure, move star along the slit in "guide" mode in one direction (say West) until the exposure is finished. Time should be ~19:20 (sid time 18:50) HR 7030: Target is bright star. - After pointing, center star on slit. NO GUIDING! - Take 30 s HeAr lamp comparison exposure - Set "guide" mode motion at 1 arcsec/sec - After starting a 90 sec exposure, move star along the slit in "guide" mode in one direction (say West) until the exposure is finished. Time should be ~19:30 (sid time 19:00) HD172401: Target is bright star. - After pointing, center star on slit. NO GUIDING! - Take 30 s HeAr lamp comparison exposure - Set "guide" mode motion at 1 arcsec/sec - After starting a 120 sec exposure, move star along the slit in "guide" mode in one direction (say West) until the exposure is finished. Time should be ~19:40 (sid time 19:10) HR 7317: Target is bright star. - After pointing, center star on slit. NO GUIDING! - Take 30 s HeAr lamp comparison exposure - Set "guide" mode motion at 1 arcsec/sec - After starting a 60 sec exposure, move star along the slit in "guide" mode in one direction (say West) until the exposure is finished. Time should be ~19:50 (sid time 19:20) - FOCUS TELESCOPE. A good target to do so would be LTT 7379 (see target list), a ~10th mag star which will be used for flux calibration anyway (next observation) Time should be ~20:10 (sid time 19:40) LTT 7379: Target is Flux standard star.
