This is your opportunity to observe the heavens from the Mount Stony Brook Observatory (the 14" telescope on the roof of the ESS building).
These nights are optional. You may come and go as you please. We will do some naked-eye observing, pointing out the planets and constellations. We will also use the 14" telescope to observe planets, stars, and nebulae.
If you cannot attend one of these sessions, you can attend one of the AST 105 observing sessions. We'll let you know when they are. There are also public observing sessions on the first Fridays of the month, as part of the department's Open Night program.
In the case of inclement weather, including mostly overcast skies, the session will be cancelled.
Directions to the Mount Stony Brook Observatory: Take the stairs to the roof. Note that the stairwells at the ends of the building only go up 3 floors: use one of the 2 stairwells that go to the 4th floor, and then proceed up one more flight to the roof. If you prefer not to walk, take the elevator to the 4th floor, and then go to the stairwell at the end of the corridor (either direction) and go up one flight to the roof. Do not crowd into the elevator; it sometimes gets stuck when full.
There is a combination lock on the door. The doors should be open, but the combination will be announced in class.
