When meteors hit! (2/15)
A metor exploded over western Siberia on the morning of February 15.
Rocks from space hit us all the time, but the frequency decreases as they get
larger. This was fairly small, with a mass estimated at about 10 tons.
It exploded in an airburst some 8-10 miles up, but the shock waves shattered
glass on the ground, and over 1000 injuries have been reported. The energy
release was apparently in the kilo-ton range.
Reports can be found on-line from reputable news sources, such as the
New York Times and CNN.
A good collection of movies is available
here, on the New York Times site.
would happen if a larger rock it (and it will someday)?
